Glad I'm not in South Africa this weekend PDF Print
Saturday, 15 September 2007

They love their Rugby in South Africa. Thinking about it, maybe love isn't a strong enough word; they are madly passionate about it and yesterday those passions would have been boiling over.

Bars would have been packed, they'd be a braai on every street and the celebrations would have been much fun and gone late into the night.

I say celebrations because South Africa beat England yesterday and it was more than just a beating, it was a massacre.

In fact it was such a bad loss for England that it ranks as the worst ever defeat in a World Cup. We didn't even score a point!

The reason I'm happy I'm not in South Africa is because for the next two weeks it would be mentioned every time you met someone and they figured out you were English. And they love to talk about their Rugby.

It was a hugely embarrassing result but did any of us really think we had a hope of competing in this tournament? I'm not a huge Rugby fan but the general feeling, from what I've read, is that we were going to make up the numbers.

South Africa had the bounce of the ball, they kicked well and they were more powerful. They won and while England still have a chance of progressing, for this tournament anyway, I'm backing a team that do have a chance of winning, it not much better than ours.

I'll be watching and backing South Africa from now because I'm not taking any stick in Sweden and it was quite embarrassing yesterday.
