Even if it should be, it's not. This will be my third midsummer in Sweden so I've done a little digging and found some interesting reading on the subject.
Basically it's the biggest event of the year and is always held on the Friday either just before or just after the actual midsummer day, which coincidentally is today.
The Swedes have a huge party which usually, or so I'm told, is quite traditional. The starter usually involved herring, the main course is very much BBQ'd and for pudding you've got strawberries.
During the day there is also the erection of the maypole, believed to have been introduced to Sweden by Germans in the fourteenth or fifteenth century. It's apparently quite important and is something we'll be doing tomorrow.
But basically the reason for the day, as far as I can see is to have a good time and a few drinks. It's usually common practise to visit a few houses, get drunk and stumble home.
